Pennsylvania's unemployment rate drops to 7.5 percent

The number of people working increased by 24,000 and the number of unemployed dropped to 488,000.

Pennsylvania's unemployment rate ticked down another tenth of a percentage point in May, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry.

The rate of 7.5 percent is the lowest in the state since 2009. There have been four consecutive monthly declines, the state said.

The rate has dropped four-tenths of a percentage point this year and the labor force has increased by 45,000, the state said. The number of people working increased by 24,000 in the past month, the largest such spike since August 1983, the state said.

The number of unemployed drooped to 488,000, the state said.

The private sector actually declined by 6,200 jobs in May, but is still up 20,600 in the past year, the state said.
