Nine people were taken to the hospital for minor injuries.

Six occupants had to be extricated from an overturned Mitsubishi following an accident this afternoon on Interstate 78 in Hunterdon County, according to New Jersey State Police.

The Mitsubishi was driving in the center lane, and went to change to the left lane when it struck a Chrysler, which lost control going eastbound, state police at Perryville said. The driver of the Chrysler struck an International tractor-trailer and ended up in the center median of the highway, police said.

The tractor-trailer was found on the right side of the road, police said.

The occupants of the Mitsubishi were extricated from the vehicle by the Bloomsbury Fire Department and were taken to St. Luke's University Hospital in Bethlehem Township, Pa., police said.

The three occupants of the Chrysler were taken to Morristown Memorial Hospital with minor injuries, police said, and the driver of the tractor-trailer was uninjured.

Traffic was backed up for five miles when the road was closed for about 40 minutes, state police said.
