Combined, Warren and Hunterdon counties will receive over $50,000 from the New Jersey Historical Commission in a series of general operating support grants, the state announced today.

"The general operating support program assists the state's history community in realizing their most important and pressing goals," Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno said.  "These grants will have an immediate impact in enhancing educational programming for students, expanding historic preservation efforts, facilitating new academic research and scholarship and raising awareness of New Jersey's essential place in American history."

In Warren County, the Allamuchy Township School District will be the sole benefactor of the program, receiving $23,379 in a general operating support grant for the 2014 fiscal year.

A total of $28,136 in grants will be split three ways in Hunterdon County.

The Red Mill Museum Village in Clinton will receive the most with $10,972 followed by $10,841 to Readington Township and $6,323 awarded to the Lambertville Historical Society.

The Red Mill Museum Village also received funding from the program last year as it was awarded $11,380 in 2012.

"This financial support reaffirms our commitment to Hunterdon County's historical organizations and their important programs," Guadagno said. "It also recognizes the impact these organizations have on economic growth and job creation."

An independent, third-party peer-review process determines which programs the commission funds. A portion of the revenue produced by the state's hotel and motel tax legislation contributes to funding.

Readington Township Mayor Julia Allen said the grant will go directly to funding a part-time museum director to oversee the township's three museums.

The director is also responsible for offering historical programs to local elementary school students.

"It really enables the township to have an active museum program," Allen said.
