A boater went missing early Monday morning, authorities say.
The search for a missing boater in Beltzville Lake was expected to resume about 8:30 this morning, a Carbon County official said.
The search at the state park in Towamensing Township was suspended about 3:30 Monday afternoon due to approaching thunderstorms, county Director of Emergency Management Mark Nalesnik said.
The boater went missing about 6 Monday morning, Nalesnik said. The 14-foot fishing craft was "operating improperly," and fishermen on the shore said they thought they heard cries of help, but couldn't see anyone out in the middle of the lake, Nalesnik said. The theory is the boater was holding on to the boat, which was moving, Nalesnik said.
The boater's family was brought in after the search was suspended, Nalesnik said. They were updated on whatever information authorities had, he said.
The water in the lake could be murky this morning after heavy rain overnight, he said.
It's likely the boat launches will be closed today at the lake, but the swimming area likely will be open, a person who answered the phone this morning at the park said.
Rescue personnel had gathered near the lake, she said.
