The separated couple waived their preliminary hearings today.

Hassan and Shawnta Carmon waived preliminary hearings today on charges the pair defrauded late philanthropist Marlene "Linny" Fowler out of more than $1 million.

Attorneys for the Carmons, who are being represented separately, indicated they're looking for a plea deal in the case. The Allentown pair are married but separated, said Steven Mills on behalf of Hassan Carmon.

"Hopefully we'll be able to negotiate a favorable disposition, or an acceptable disposition," said Brian Monahan, representing Shawnta Carmon.

By waiving the hearing, the pair is admitting there is enough evidence for the case to stand trial.

Assistant District Attorney James Augustine said the state has an abundance of evidence in the case.

"What will help them ultimately is that they worked with us today and didn't fight the charges," Augustine said. "I really don't expect this case to go to trial."

Augustine said the restitution in the case is likely "more than they'll be able to pay back in a lifetime." That figure has yet to be determined, he said.

The pair likely faces state prison sentences, he said.
