Snow falls and vehicles crash - an early look at rush hour

Major routes in New Jersey were in good shape early on.

Today's snowstorm arrived on schedule, so it's not a surprise.

But stopping a vehicle after snow hits street with the temperature below 20 degrees is still a risky bet. Leaving plenty of room between your vehicle and the one in front of you is the best advice.

Sometimes, however, the best of advice does little good as you lock up your brakes, say a little prayer and then your prayer's not answered.

Two cars crashed just before 6 o'clock at Route 248 and ProLogis Parkway in Lower Nazareth Township. Injuries were reported. There was a crash about the same time on Route 33 South near Stockertown. And someone lost control of a vehicle at McCartney Street and College Avenue in Easton that required a tow. A stretch of McCartney Street was eventually shut down.

All the reports came from the Northampton County emergency dispatch center.

When asked if there were any major accidents, a shift supervisor said, "not right now. We're looking good right now."

New Jersey State Police at Perryville in Hunterdon County said Interstate 78 was free of accidents and a sergeant at the Hope barracks in Warren County said Interstate 80 and other major roads were "all quiet."

While there weren't speed restrictions, traffic maps show slow going on both major highways in New Jersey.

A crash was reported just before 8 o'clock on the Easton exit from Interstate 78 West in Williams Township, according to emergency radio reports. There were no injuries, emergency dispatches said.

Forecasts remain for accumulation of between one and four inches,
