Storms knock out power, down trees in Pennsylvania, New Jersey - UPDATE

PPL and Met-Ed were reporting outages in Lehigh, Northampton, Warren and Hunterdon counties. See PHOTOS.

Gallery previewA strong line of thunderstorms rumbled through the region this afternoon, knocking out power in some spots and toppling trees and wires.

The National Weather Service issued a severe storm warning through 5:45 p.m., with a storm watch in effect through 9 o'clock.

In Warren County, trees were reported down in the Phillipsburg area. In Northampton County, trees were down in Upper Nazareth Township and on Route 512, near Jacksonville Road, in East Allen Township.

John McDevitt, emergency management coordinator for East Allen Township trees, wires and poles were down in in Jacksonville village, with some of the trees damaging homes and vehicles.

"Some trees landed on roofs and some were going through the roof," McDevitt said.

East Allen Fire Chief Barry Frantz said it appears all 50 homes in Jacksonville village have some damage from the storm. He said Route 512 has reopened but Jacksonville, Locust and Arrowhead Roads remain closed.

Frantz said debris and trees damaged about 10 vehicles. No injuries were reported.

The National Weather Service issued a flood advisory until 7:30 p.m. for parts of southern New Jersey.

As of about 9:25 p.m. PPL was reporting power outages for 40 customers in Lehigh County and 91 customers in Northampton County.

Met Ed was reporting the following number of customers were affected by power outages.

In Pennsylvania:

  • East Allen Township: 11
  • Lower Mount Bethel Township: less than 5
  • Bushkill Township: less than 5
  • Moore Township: less than 5

In New Jersey:

  • Bethlehem Township, N.J.: less than 5
  • Washington Township: less than 5
