New Jersey commuters heading into New York over the George Washington Bridge should brace themselves for some major delays.

A three-month construction project on the Alexander Hamilton Bridge on the New York side got under way over the weekend.

The Alexander Hamilton is the main thoroughfare for eastbound drivers crossing the GWB and getting to I-95 in the Bronx.

Traffic could back up for miles into New Jersey.
Early in the first weekday of construction, delays were not debilitating, the Star-Ledger reports.

New Jersey drivers are advised to use the three Staten Island crossing. Motorists from the north can use the Tappan Zee Bridge.

Commuters also can leave their cars behind and hop on a NY Waterway ferry. Ferries are available from Edgewater and Weehawken.

The work on the Alexander Hamilton involves steel reinforcement and deck replacement.
