They were two of seven cities to receive the distinction from KaBOOM!, a nonprofit playground-building organization.
Allentown and Bethlehem are among seven Pennsylvania cities and towns to be named a "Playful City USA Community" this year. That distinction, bestowed by the nonprofit playground-building organization, recognizes cities that have "demonstrated creative commitments to the cause of play."
Recognized this year were 213 cities and towns. It is the fourth consecutive year Allentown has received the distinction, and the second year for Bethlehem.
"Allentown remains committed to prioritizing play and physical activity by working on creative ideas, programs and opportunities for our children each and every day," said Greg Weitzel, Allentown director of parks and recreation.Playful City USA celebrates and encourages cities and towns to share creative ideas, concepts and programs in an effort to increase play opportunities for children, according to KaBOOM!
"We're happy about it and we hope we can live up to the reputation," said Jane Persa, Bethlehem recreation administrator. "We try to make the city as fun as we possibly can for the residents, and it's a great honor to be named a Playful City."KaBOOM! and the city of Bethlehem worked together in June 2010 on major improvements to the Higbee Park, which included a new play set at the Franklin and Spring streets park.
Allentown officials attributed their Playful City designation in part to Allentown's Destination Playground, which includes more than 300 play opportunities and draws thousands of visitors per weekend.
As part of that new playspace, the city hosts Inclusion Playtime, days where organizations can provide support to youth with disabilities and share information about available resources.
"Our playground at Cedar Beach is enjoyed by children of all ages," Allentown Mayor Ed Pawlowski said. "We couldn't be happier with its success.”Other Playful City designations in Pennsylvania went to Scranton, Reading, Pittsburgh, York and New Kensington, according to the KaBOOM! website.
"Some of the most innovative concepts and cost-effective programs are being developed in Playful City USA communities," said KaBOOM! founder Darell Hammond. "Cities like Allentown are key allies in the fight to combat the play deficit and serve as outstanding role models for government and community leaders across the country."
